Fan art from visual artist Butcher Billy sees John Cena’s Peacemaker meet Matter-Eater Lad for the first time in an old-school-style comic cover.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Peacemaker Episode 4, “The Choad Less Traveled” now streaming on HBO Max.
Peacemaker fan art by visual artist Butcher Billy imagines the first time John Cena’s anti-hero meets Matter Eater Lad.
The art, shared by Billy on Twitter, is reminiscent of classic comic book covers and offers a visual depiction of a story told by Christopher Smith / Peacemaker in Episode 4, “The Choad Less Traveled,” of when he first met a hero called Matter -Eater Lad, who allegedly ate an entire Wendy’s restaurant.
Matter-Eater Lad first appeared in DC Comics in Adventure Comics # 303 in 1962, and he is not the first obscure hero series creator James Gunn has introduced to the DC Extended Universe via Peacemaker, including Bat-Mite (a “two-foot-tall interdimensional imp who stans Batman”) in the show’s second episode and Doll-Man. Gunn also introduced a few obscure characters to the DCEU as the writer / director for The Suicide Squadincluding Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man and Weasel.
“I would love to see more of these characters,” Steve Agee, who plays John Economos in Peacemaker, said of these obscure characters and the potential for them to appear in live-action now that they are DCEU canon. “And it’s just a testament to how great James is [Gunn] is at writing characters. Like, he can take a really stupid character on paper, you know if you’re like, ‘This is a bad idea,’ and really give him depth, and he’ll make them somebody that you’ve rooting for. I would love to see Bat-Mite and Matter-Eater Lad [show up]. “
Gunn has said that DC and HBO Max let him go “hog wild” for Peacemakerallowing for him to make heroes like Matter-Eater Lad and Bat-Mite DCEU canon, but also for John Cena’s Christopher Smith / Peacemaker to not only make outlandish claims about other heroes in the DC Extended Universe, like Superman and Aquaman.
“There was one thing that maybe I pushed a little too far in the original scripts of Peacemaker, which I pulled back on this much, “Gunn said.” But other than that, they kind of let me go hog wild. I think they had a lot of questions. Now Bat-Mite is in the DCEU. I think it’s hilarious. Who knows! But that’s the way it is. There was, every once in a while, some questions about that type of stuff, but for the most part, these guys have been fantastic partners, but especially HBO Max was. “
When Peacemaker was first announced, Gunn called the series “an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero / supervillain / and world’s biggest douchebag.” He said, “I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. “
New episodes of Peacemaker drop every Thursday on HBO Max.
